Cherry On The Cake

When you are a kid, you know you sometimes feel like you are about two inches tall? Well, Hyebin Lee's Cherry On The Cake literalises this concept.

Poor Cherry is being ignored on her birthday. Her family are too busy doing the housework or strolling around town, their plans don't include her. Subsequently, she shrinks to the size of a match box.

Told with Miyazaki-style animation (in which we're treated to detailed backdrops and simple, bright figures in the foreground), Cherry On The Cake is a lot of fun. Although stretched a little thin for its seven-minute running time, the short beautifully culminates in a sequence where Cherry is almost washed away by her family's tears. They do miss her, after all.

A cute, plinky-plonky score seals the deal, and the result is totally charming.
